How to avoid a web site!

Categories: Tweaks, Windows

Specific instructions on keeping away from inevitableheartbreakandpain.com.

Ever not been able to keep your little clicking mouse from obsessively browsing to that bad, dark place on the web?

Maybe it's the porn site that could land you in the unemployment line because you can't tear your eyes away at work. Maybe it's fantasy sports games or stock prices just calling on you to check them every hour. Maybe it's some forum or auction or chat or "gold box" sucking up your time or money or sanity because they're just an HTTP request away.

If pure iron will fails, a few simple steps will help keep you away from inevitableheartbreakandpain.com.

Mac OS/X:

  • In Finder, from the Go menu, choose "Go to folder."
  • In the "Go to the folder" dialog, type "/etc/".
  • From the /etc/ folder window, open the "hosts" file in a text editor.
  • Add the following to the hosts file in its own line, using the site that applies to you:
    127.0.0.1 inevitableheartbreakandpain.com
  • Save and quit.

Windows:

  • Using Notepad or some other text editor, open the file named "hosts", which is located in the following directory:
    • Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    • Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    • Windows 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS
  • Add the following on its own line in the hosts file, using the site that applies to you:
    127.0.0.1 inevitableheartbreakandpain.com
  • Save and quit.

Now, assuming you are not running a web site on your computer, when your self-destructive, undisciplined self types the the URL http://inevitableheartbreakandpain.com into your web browser's address bar, the trembling, vulnerable, sensitive you will get some variation of the message:

Cannot connect to server inevitableheartbreakandpain.com.

And then you can turn off the computer, pour yourself a glass of wine, and toast to technology making our lives better, not worse.

You're welcome
